The online parenting organisation, Netmums, conducted a survey a few years back about the actual effects of their separation on children. Getting on for a third of under 18s who were surveyed said that they were ‘devastated’ by their parents divorce.

Divorce and relationship breakdown – how are family finances divided?
Of all the issues that follow relationship breakdown, financial issues are usually the most complex and take the longest to settle.
When going through a divorce, all family assets – such as pensions, savings, property, and investments – must be taken into account. That requires both sides providing a full breakdown of of their assets in what is referred to as “full and frank disclosure”.
And our solicitors always encourage parties in a divorce to try to negotiate a settlement they can both live with – and to avoid a formal application to court. That normally increases costs significantly, adds delay to the whole process, not to say introducing a considerably increased amount of stress. And in the vast majority of cases,when a settlement has been reached, to safeguard both sides, solicitors will ask the court to formalise that agreement in the form as what is known as a clean break order – which ensures the end of the matter and in general terms preventing either party from reopening that settlement.
